Whales for supper,It has been a long, long history for Japanese people  to eat whales and dolphins. It was also strong religious taboo to eat animal or beast meat, after Buddhism was introduced in 5th Century. 
 Instead of eating animal meat, Japanese had been eating a lot of fish from their coastal sea including “whales” to obtain protein.
“Sukiyaki” now the most famous Japanese food was only invented after Meiji Restoration that truly opened up doors to foreign countries in 1868.
Beef, pork and chicken were rather expensive, while whale meat was cheap. I remember the days in my elementary school, where the school provided lunch for pupils. When they cooked meat, it was always whale cutlet called “Geikatsu”.
My humble dream at that time was to eat pork cutlet for school lunch and for supper at home. I was born in 1949 in occupied Japan by Allied Forces.
 Time has passed. Japan had become one of the Economic Giants in the world. Catching whales has been almost prohibited all over the world. Whale meat has become precious. One piece of good whale meat on Sushi costs more than 20 dollars at high class Sushi bar in Tokyo. Many youngsters seem to have little eagerness or have none to eat whale meat, because they have alternatives of other meat.
There are still 4 fishing villages allowed to catch Baird's Beaked Whales, that are excluded from International Whaling Commission mandatory of season and catches amount. 
 Wadaura is one of them. They are allowed to catch 26 whales from June 20th to August 31st.this year. Japanese Fishery Agency sets the regulation every year.
Facing Pacific Ocean, Wadaura is sunny and cozy little fishing village in Chiba. It is located at 70 miles Southeast of Tokyo. In the open space with tin roof, I watched how 20 workers dragged whales from the sea, skinned them off, beheaded and cut into meat piece as food.
 Watching butchering the whale was my first experience in my life. It is surely too bad to the people, who are strongly against whaling. But my honest impression was nothing more than seeing tuna to be prepared at Sushi bar restaurant. Tiny eyes did provoke a bit of my sympathy though. Only difference from tuna cutting was its scale.  Whales were about 10 meters long. It took more than 2 hours to be dismantled. Almost all parts are to be utilized.
 Seeing it did not stimulate my appetite, although I like a good part of whale meat as Sashimi. But it is natural. Even a pretty young American lady who loves juicy and bloody Beef Steak would never feel her appetite, when she could have a chance to watch slaughtered Ox to be cut into pieces.
We human beings eat a lot of eat. That means we kill a lot of animals, or deprive a lot of lives in order to keep our life. In our modern days most consumers have almost no chance to face the fact. But the fact is fact.
In my photo gallery, you will see every part of the procedures of butchering. Also you will see old ladies smiling in line for buying whale meat.
